What's Coming Up In KindergartenReading: This week in reading we will be studying the short a sound. The sight words for the week are "pretty" and "please". We will be studying the -ing word family. Have your child make different words by changing the beginning sounds.
Language Arts: Kindergarten will be working on the writing genre response to literature. We will use drawings, letters and phonetically spelled words to create meaning when we write. We will make connections through writing: text-to-self, text-to-text, text-to-world. We will also use subject-verb agreement and tense correctly. Math: We will be working on a unit called graphing. Students will pose informational questions, collect data, organize and display results using objects, pictures, and picture graphs. We will name of the days of the week, as well as understand yesterday, today and tomorrow. Kindergarteners will name the months of the year. We will name the four seasons. They will order daily events. We will tell the time when daily events occur, such as, morning, afternoon, and evening. We will name the days of the week in which weekly events occur in class. Science: We are currently done with all of our science untis for the year. Social Studies: Our social studies unit is personal finance. We will describe the work that people do (police officer, fire fighter, soldier, mail carrier, baker, farmer, doctor, and teacher). Kindergarteners will explain that people earn income by exchanging their human resources (physical or mental work) for wages or salaries. We will explain how money is used to purchase goods and services. They will explain that people must make choices because they cannot have everything they want. News and Reminders Technology tidbits:
This month’s featured website allows students to practice counting money. Our money unit is one of the most difficult so extra practice would benefit most children. http://www.primarygames.com/Spending%20Spree/start.htm. Keeping Skills Sharp Over the Summer Your child worked very hard all year long. You may want to help him/her retain all the wonderful things he/she learned. Some of the things you can do to help are: Staple some paper together or purchase a special notebook so your child can keep writing over the summer. Call it a special journal that he/she can keep forever to remind him/her of “Summer 2012.” A couple of times per week have your child write about what he/she has been doing. Be sure to check for sentences to start with capital letters, for no other letters to be capitalized except for names, and check for periods at the end of sentences. Utilize websites suggested throughout the year, and continue to look for others that emphasize practicing skills. Keep using the high frequency word cards we made all year long. If they have become easy, make some new word cards with high frequency phrases on them. Visit http://www.oe.k12.mi.us/balanced_literacy/fry_word_lists.htm for more information. Practice math facts (addition and subtraction to 12). Let your child help count coins whenever possible. Read, read, read… you read to your child and have your child read to you every day. Talk about main ideas, characters, settings, problem and solutions, etc. Practice If your child received an “N” on the progress skills checklist, it was because he/she did not know at least one of the following: *Full name *Address *Phone number *Birthday (including year) Please continue to practice this important information. Looking at the End of the School Year Here are a few things you can expect for the end of the school year: Your child will be bringing many things home, so please make sure he/she has his book bag at school every day except for the last day of school. There will be a lot of one on one testing so there may be fewer papers coming home. The kindergarten end of the year party will be held on May 16th from 10:30-11:30. Parents are welcome to attend. Be sure to allow extra time to park. The parking spaces fill up quickly and we would hate for you to have to leave the party to move your car out of a fire zone. Testing Dates* Reading quizzes will be given every Friday.
